Split Airport—officially Zračna luka Split-Kaštela—sits 24 kilometres west of Split's old town, a modernist terminal wedged between the Adriatic and the Kozjak range. Since its 1966 opening, the airport has served as the principal gateway to Dalmatia, handling 3.2 million passengers annually by 2025. Yet a significant share of arrivals bypass Split entirely, bound instead for Medjugorje, the Herzegovinian pilgrimage village 130 kilometres southeast across the border. The route from SPU to Medjugorje cleaves to the Croatian coast before turning inland at Ploče, crossing into Bosnia and Herzegovina near Metković. The journey spans approximately 2.5 hours under normal conditions, though summer traffic along the Makarska Riviera and queues at the Klek border checkpoint can extend travel time by 30 to 45 minutes. The road itself—E65 and then M17—threads through karst plateaus and Herzegovina's tobacco-growing valleys, a landscape of white limestone outcrops and Neretva riverine plain that has shaped centuries of trade and pilgrimage traffic between the Adriatic littoral and the interior. Medjugorje itself emerged as a devotional centre in June 1981, when six local teenagers reported apparitions of the Virgin Mary on Podbrdo hill. Within a decade, the village transformed from an agricultural hamlet of fewer than 400 residents into one of Europe's most visited pilgrimage sites, drawing an estimated 1.5 million visitors annually by the early 2020s. The Catholic Church has not formally recognised the apparitions, yet the flow of pilgrims remains undiminished—Polish, Italian, and Irish groups arrive year-round, their coaches and minivans threading the narrow streets flanked by guesthouses, rosary vendors, and the twin spires of St. James Church. The logistical challenge for arriving pilgrims is immediate: SPU lacks direct public transport to Bosnia, and the handful of scheduled coaches depart infrequently from Split's main bus station, requiring an additional transfer from the airport. Private vehicle services have consequently become the default option, ranging from eight-seat minivans operated by Herzegovinian drivers to premium sedans booked through international platforms. Most providers offer fixed-rate pricing, meet-and-greet service at the arrivals hall, and crucially, familiarity with the border formalities—passports are checked, though EU and many other nationals require no visa for short stays. The transfer from split airport to medjugorje has, in effect, become a specialised corridor within Balkan transport networks, a secular service sustaining a sacred economy.
